Western mediators often pursue their own goals and try to influence the course of negotiations, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
If negotiations between Ukraine and Russia resume one day, they will likely be direct, without any intermediaries. This was stated by the director of the second department of the CIS countries of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Alexei Polishchuk, TASS reports on Friday, January 13.
“If and when these contacts continue, they will probably also be direct. And this will be the best option, because, as practice shows, Western mediators often pursue their own goals and try to influence the course of negotiations, acting not to resolve the conflict, but in their own political and economic interests,” Polischuk said when asked if Moscow was ready for the fact that possible future negotiations would have to be directly carry out the current authorities in Kyiv.
The Russian diplomat drew attention to the fact that last year the negotiations with Ukraine were direct.
“Until now, we have only directly communicated with the Ukrainians using the platforms kindly provided to us, which we really appreciate. In February-April last year, three rounds of Russian-Ukrainian dialogue were held in Belarus and one in Turkey. Then almost daily contacts were made via video link. It was direct negotiations with the Ukrainians,” recalled Polishchuk.
Remember that the Kremlin does not yet see the prospects for peace talks in Ukraine. This was said by the press secretary of the President of Russia, Dmitry Peskov.
As you know, on October 4, 2022, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree excluding negotiations with Putin, but negotiations with Russia are possible.
Later, Zelensky made a statement that Vladimir Putin was not good enough. Therefore, Ukraine cannot negotiate with the current Russian leadership.
