The opinion of the German leader on the supply of Leopard to Kyiv may be changed by the President of the United States, reports Politico.
Britain’s initiative to supply tanks to Ukraine is a “headache” for German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. At the same time, the position of the head of the German government is highly dependent on US President Joseph Biden, reports Politico.
Scholz’s spokesman said that London’s plans to supply Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine will not change the position of the German government, which has not yet decided to transfer Leopard tanks to Kyiv.
The media notes, citing two German sources, that the position of German chancellor is highly dependent on Biden, with whom Scholz was closely involved in his actions when he decided to move German combat vehicles Marder infantry in Ukraine.
The chancellor previously stressed the importance of discussing arms with the US president, saying that sending tanks to Ukraine should be discussed “with friends and allies, and especially with a transatlantic partner, the United States of America.”
The publication also states that the supply of British technology will increase the pressure on Scholz, as the UK will be the first country to take this step.
As you know, Scholz said earlier that Germany will not transfer Leopard tanks to Ukraine only – only with its allies.
We also wrote earlier that the Polish authorities decided to transfer a company of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine as part of an international coalition
