New Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders Bans the Term “Latinx” on State Documents

On the first day of her tenure as the newly elected Republican governor of Arkansas, former White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders filed seven executive orders, including one. ban the word “Latinx” in official state documents.

“When Latino politicians use the term [Latinx] it’s largely to appease rich white progressives who think that’s the term we use. It’s a vicious cycle of confirmation bias,” Gallego said in a Tweets in December 2021.

Six more executive orders were signed Monday by Sanders, who served as press secretary in the Trump administration. An ordinance prohibits public schools from teaching critical race theory, a theoretical framework for examining how society’s perception of race shapes structures and systems. Sanders, like Republicans in other states, were happy opponents of the theory taught in schools.

Sanders was sworn in as governor on Monday, making her the first woman to hold the position in Arkansas. His father was a former state governor.
