The Russian vessel Lady R, whose owner transports weapons for the Kremlin, disabled its transponder in December before sneaking into South Africa’s largest naval base, where it delivered and loaded an undisclosed cargo. On Monday, January 9, The Wall Street Journal reports.
It was noted that South Africa refused to say what the ship was carrying or what was loaded on it at the Simonstown naval base.
The country’s Defense Minister dismissed US concerns.
The visit of the ship Lady R, owned by a Russian shipping company, strained relations between Washington and Pretoria. It also shows the difficulty for the US and its allies in enforcing sanctions against Moscow.
A senior US official said Washington was concerned about the support the South African military provided to the Lady R, including allowing it to enter and transfer cargo to the naval base.

Kobus Marais, an MP and defense spokesman for South Africa’s opposition Democratic Alliance, said the Lady R was carrying ammunition from Russia, although it is usually imported through commercial ports.
The US imposed sanctions on Lady R on May 8.
Recall that in December, in the area of the Bratievsky bridge in the southeast of Moscow, a ship exploded. One person was rescued in a boat.
