At least 300 supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro were arrested this Sunday for invading and destroying the headquarters of the Congress, the President and the Supreme Court in an attempt to overthrow President Luis Inacio. Lula da Silvaofficial sources said.
“300 detainees. The investigation continues until the last participant is identified,” said Brasilia Civil Police, which reported 170 crime scene arrests in a previous balance sheet.
The institution indicated that the detainees are being “identified” and their statements are being taken as part of a process that is “investigating all criminal acts committed” on Sunday afternoon in the Brazilian capital.
Earlier, Minister of Justice Flavio Dino said at a press conference that the number of detainees for Coup attempt against Lula may intensify “in the coming hours.”
The minister also revealed that they have seized “40 buses” that have arrived in the Brazilian capital in the past few hours with hundreds of radical bolsonars, and that they have installed “financiers” who have made these trips possible from different parts of the country.
“It’s a coup!”
Similarly, he denounced that “there are still people on the Internet talking about ongoing terrorist acts”, and in this sense, he expected police operations to be carried out against these individuals.
“This is terrorism! This is a coup!” he exclaimed.
Thousands of Bolsonarists broke into the offices of the Parliament, the President and the Supreme Court, causing severe damage for four hours before the security forces dispersed them.
Dino indicated that the governors of other Brazilian states are “hiring” police agents to “strengthen the security of the Federal District” in the coming days.
He also said that they will ask the Armed Forces to use troops to support these tasks.
“We are not going to go down the path of crime in order to wage a political struggle in Brazil,” Dino said.
The Minister of Justice also criticized the actions of the Federal District of Brasilia authorities and warned that possible “omissions” in an attempt to dissuade Bolsonaro’s many radicals would be investigated.
For his part, President Lula issued a decree on federal intervention in the security zone of the Brazilian capital.
The measure, which will be in effect until January 31, means that Brasilia’s security forces and authorities will now come under the control of the central government.
The events, unanimously condemned by the international community, took place exactly one week after Lula became President of Brazil.
