Helga Maria Schmid believes that “communication channels” may be needed in Russia in the future.
Russia’s membership in the OSCE still makes sense. This is what the Secretary General of the organization Helga Maria Schmid said in an interview with Welt on Monday, January 9th.
He argues that keeping diplomatic channels open does not mean there is an agreement.
“In any case, from today’s point of view, I think it makes sense for Russia to remain a member of the OSCE,” the official said.
According to him, the OSCE is the only security organization where everyone who is important for the European security architecture sits at the same table.
Schmidt added that the OSCE emerged from a confrontation in the Cold War and was founded by countries that had different interests but wanted to prevent escalation.
“One day we will need communication channels again,” the general secretary expressed his opinion.
Recall that the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky called on the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe to be the leader in the fight against Russian terrorism, in particular, he called for the exclusion of the Russian Federation from the OSCE.
We add that the Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba noted that at the end of November 2022, the OSCE Ministerial Council was held for the first time without Russia.
