Russian TV showed footage of Putin at the Christmas service.
During the so-called ceasefire declared by him on the occasion of Orthodox Christmas, the Russian president, alone – apart from him there were only clergymen – attended a service in the Annunciation Cathedral of the Kremlin. This can be seen in the video shown by the state television channel Rossiya 1. Putin was met by the dean of the churches of the Klin district of the Sergiev Posad diocese, Hieromonk Joseph.
This is the third Christmas that Putin has celebrated in Moscow since 2000, marks the Russian Interfax, and the previous ones were twice in 2000 (in the Church of the Life-Giving Trinity on Sparrow Hills), and in 2001 – in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior.
On Thursday, January 5, after talking with Turkish leader Erdogan, he spoke with the so-called Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Kirill and instructed Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu to introduce a ceasefire for 36 hours along the entire line of military clash on the occasion of Christmas and called on Ukraine to follow this example.
In Ukraine, they insist that this is hypocrisy and a trick, President Volodymyr Zelensky called it an attempt to use a religious holiday as a cover. Kyiv noted that shelling from the Russian side did not stop after the start of the ceasefire.
