The US House of Representatives has finally elected a speaker – Republican Kevin McCarthy. I had to hold 15 votes.
The politician finally managed to get the necessary votes of his party colleagues, who had previously refused to vote for him.
The total number of votes cast for McCarthy is 216 out of 428 cast.
According to The Wall Street Journal, 57-year-old McCarthy made significant concessions to win over his opponents. These concessions could lead to deadlock between the GOP-controlled House of Representatives and the Democratic-led Senate, making it harder to consider in its own House of Representatives. In addition, these concessions will make it easier to remove the speaker from office if politicians are unhappy with him.
For example, now the Congress will have the opportunity to initiate the resignation of the speaker on the proposal of one of the members. Previously, only the majority of congressmen could do this.
The publication recalls that there have not been so many unsuccessful votes in the House of Representatives since the Civil War, when it took 44 attempts. This year’s vote was the first in 100 years that the Speaker of that House of Congress did not win the first round.
It was expected that McCarthy would take office on Tuesday, January 3, but the vote for the candidacy of the speaker of the House had to be held 15 times, because a group of radical Republicans refused to support a fellow party member.
