Rep. Matt Gaetz threatened to leave Congress on Thursday if House Republicans reached a deal with Democrats to pick a GOP nominee — and his critics were overjoyed that he kept that promise. (Watch the video below.)
Fox News anchor Laura Ingraham asked Gaetz, one of the far-right backers who blocked Kevin McCarthy’s election by 11 votes, if he would be “agreeable” to a bipartisan deal with moderate Democrats to break the deadlock.
Gaetz said there’s no way it’s going to happen because Democrats won’t break ranks by voting for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (DN.Y.).
To demonstrate his certainty, he said, “If the Democrats come together to elect a moderate Republican, I will resign from the House of Representatives.”
A theme that came up in Twitter users’ responses.
“Promises, promises,” wrote one.
“We can only hope,” wrote another.
