The businessman cannot leave the country and must report to local police before an extradition hearing in Ukraine, scheduled for January 19.
A court in Chambéry, in eastern France, on Thursday, January 5, decided to release Ukrainian billionaire Konstantin Zhevago on bail of one million euros pending an extradition hearing in Ukraine. This was reported by Reuters.
It was noted that the 48-year-old businessman cannot leave France, must surrender two of his passports to the authorities, report to the local police three times a week and answer court summonses.
He told the court that he had done nothing wrong and should not be extradited.
“I am in jail for the first time. I did not commit the charge against me in this case, I am not worthy. I ask your permission to leave the jail until the next hearing, and I will do everything you asked, ” Zhevago emphasized at the meetings.
The court was originally supposed to hold an extradition hearing on Thursday, but the billionaire’s lawyers and the prosecutor said they needed more time to prepare, to which the judges agreed, setting a new date for January 19.
Recall that at the end of December, Zhevago was arrested in France at the request of Ukraine, and since then he has been in custody.
In 2019, the State Bureau of Investigation of Ukraine placed the businessman on the national wanted list, and in 2021 – on the international. He is suspected of embezzling $113 million from the bank Finance and Credit.
