Beijing, against the backdrop of the “routine” maneuver of the American warship, called on Washington to “immediately stop stirring up trouble.”
China reacted very negatively to the passage of the American Arleigh Burke-class warship Chung-Hoon in the Taiwan Strait on January 5, Voice of America reported.
The Pentagon confirmed the destroyer passed through the strait separating mainland China and the island of Taiwan as part of “routine” operations, but Liu Pengyu, a spokesman for the Chinese embassy in the United States, called for “stop provoking unrest.”
“US warships have often flexed their muscles to exercise freedom of navigation… China will continue to be alert and ready to respond to all threats and provocations at any time, and will resolutely defend its national sovereignty and territorial integrity”, the Chinese side said in a statement.
The US military stressed that Chung-Hoon’s passage through the Taiwan Strait “demonstrates the United States’ commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific.”
Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense clarified that the warship passed north through the strait. Taiwan’s military monitored the destroyer’s passage and noticed nothing unusual.
It will be recalled that China considers Taiwan its territory and in recent years has increased pressure on the self-governing island. Taiwan’s government rejects China’s claims and says it wants peace but will defend itself if attacked.
