An aide to the Ukrainian president’s office said on Thursday in response to Moscow’s announcement of a Christmas ceasefire that there would be a “temporary truce” only after Russia leaves the occupied territories.
Mykhailo Podolyak, one of the figures closest to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, wrote about this on his Twitter account. Ukraine does not attack a foreign country, but defends its territory, and called the Russian statement “hypocritical.”
The Kremlin today ordered a 36-hour ceasefire starting at 12:00 Moscow time (09:00 GMT) tomorrow, Friday, on the occasion of Orthodox Christmas.
“First, Ukraine it does not attack foreign territory and does not kill civilians, as the Russian Federation does. Ukraine it only destroys the members of the occupying army on its territory,” Podolyak said, refusing a temporary truce.
“Secondly, the Russian Federation must withdraw from the occupied territories. Only then will she have a “temporary truce.” Beware of hypocrisy,” he concluded.
“Cynical Trap”
The adviser already this morning criticized the request of the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Kirill to establish a Christmas truce so that believers can go to churches without fear for their safety.
The Russian Orthodox Church acts as a “propagandist” for the war, Podolyak said, adding that the organization is inciting the genocide of Ukrainians and the militarization of Russian society.
For all of these reasons, Kirill’s ceasefire announcements are “a cynical trap and an element of propaganda,” the adviser stressed.
