More than half of the German population considers the diplomatic efforts of the German government to resolve the crisis related to the Russian war against Ukraine insufficient, follows from a survey by Deutschlandtrend.
The war in Ukraine remains for the Germans the main problem that the FRG government must solve. This is confirmed by the results of the Deutschlandtrend representative opinion poll, published on Thursday, January 5, conducted by the infratest dimap institute commissioned by the public law television channel ARD and the newspaper Die Welt.
The war in Ukraine is considered the most important political problem at the moment by 24 percent of respondents. This is 13 percentage points lower than the last similar survey conducted in June 2022.
At the same time, more than half of the respondents (52%) said they consider the diplomatic efforts of the German government to be insufficient to resolve the crisis related to Russia’s war against Ukraine. These efforts are considered sufficient by 34% of respondents (in June – 31%), and “even reaching too far” – 4% (no change).
The attitude of the Germans to the supply of arms to Kyiv
Judging by the results of the survey, only 32% of German residents believe that the war in Ukraine will end in 2023. The majority (58%) have a different opinion. This trend can be traced to supporters of all major political parties in Germany without exception.
It was noted that in recent months in Germany, the proportion of those who think that the amount of arms supplies to Ukraine has increased. Today, this opinion is shared by 25% of respondents (an increase of 4 percentage points). The share of supporters of reducing the amount of such supplies, on the contrary, decreased – by 4 percentage points, to 26%. Meanwhile, the most important part of the respondents are those who consider the current amount of arms supplies to Ukraine to be sufficient (41 percent).
The attitude of the Germans to sanctions
As for the perception of sanctions against Russia by German residents, the share of survey participants who were satisfied with their quantity was 35% (in June – 31%). The same number of respondents expressed the opinion that the penalties are insufficient (37% in June). The share of people who consider the penalties to be excessive decreased to 19% (in June – 23%).
The survey was conducted from January 2 to January 4, 2023 by telephone and through online interviews, 1314 respondents participated in it.
