According to the calculation carried out International Press Institute (IPI), who described this evolution as “destructive”.
“The escalation of attacks on journalists in Mexicoas well as a large-scale Russian invasion of Ukrainewere determinants of the increase in the number of deaths of journalists,” summarizes IPI in its annual report on the issue.
IPI database, worldwide network of owners and publishers media Based in Vienna, it establishes five categories for the death of journalists in connection with the performance of their work.
In 2022, there were 39 targeted killings of journalists for doing their jobs. Seven people have died while covering the armed conflict, more than double the number in 2021.
Two were killed while covering civil unrest and others while covering it.
In addition, in another 16 cases, “the circumstances and motives for the murder of a journalist remain unconfirmed, but it cannot be ruled out that it was an official murder,” IPI notes.
The most dangerous places to practice a profession
America was the most dangerous continent for journalists, where 38 people died, 14 of them in Mexico and 8 in Haiti. “This year marked one of the darkest periods in the memory of the Mexican press. With 14 documented killings, Mexico remained the deadliest country in the world for journalists, even when compared to active war zones such as Ukraine”, denounces IPI.
Eleven informants died in the Asia-Pacific region, nine in Europe (of which eight in Ukraine), five in the Arab countries and three in Africa.
With regard to Russian aggression on UkraineIPI notes that since the attack began in late February, a total of eight journalists and media workers have been killed in the line of duty.
In addition, IPI points out that “there are indications that up to four other Ukrainian journalists and media workers may have been killed by Russian forces in connection with their professional activities”, although these cases have not yet been verified and are not included in the count. .
The institute also cites the rise in violence against journalists in Philippines, where five of the eleven recorded in the Asia-Pacific region died. (EFE)
