Due to the occupation and fighting in the Kyiv region, Chernobyl research was suspended.

In the liberated Chernobyl zone, a brown bear was recorded twice in 2022. The animal was captured by a camera trap on May 24 and August 19, 2022. This was announced on Wednesday, January 4, by the Chernobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve .

“As in 2020, in 2022 we again recorded a brown bear in protected areas. We hope that this individual will remain here,” the message said.

The first evidence of the presence of brown bears in the Chernobyl zone was discovered in 2014-2016. However, signs of the permanent presence and abundance of the species in the territory have not yet been determined.

“If this great monster returns to us, it can be argued that the Reserve successfully fulfills the duty of nature protection,” said the scientists.

In our country, bears live mainly in the Carpathians, and some individuals live in Polissya. The brown bear remains under threat of extinction, mainly due to loss of natural habitats, as well as poaching.

Notably, animal rights activists, along with the Armed Forces of Ukraine near occupied Liman, rescued a bear that had received a concussion.
