The tanks, once received where the agreement is approved, should enter service with the Polish Armed Forces this year.
Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak on Wednesday, January 4, signed an agreement to buy 116 Abrams M1A1 tanks from the United States, which are already in service. These tanks will strengthen NATO’s eastern flank. This was reported by Ukrinform.
It was noted that the signing of the document took place at the location of the 1st Tank Brigade of the Polish Armed Forces near Warsaw.
“The tanks, with the acceptance of which I approved the agreement today, should go into service with the Polish Armed Forces this year, and this is our victory,” said Blaszczak.
According to him, now the Polish side is negotiating with the American side on the purchase of a large batch of modern shells for these tanks. Polish tank crews are already training at the Bedrusko tank range to operate tanks of this type.
Polish Defense Minister Blaszczak noted the high level of cooperation between Poland and the United States in the defense sector. So last year Poland signed a contract to buy 250 new Abrams M1A2 SEPv3 tanks from the United States. In addition, the Patriot air defense system entered service with the Polish army, and HIMARS missile systems will arrive this year.
It will be remembered that earlier the US State Department decided to sell an additional 116 Abrams tanks with ammunition to Poland.
It has also been reported that the United States is removing M1A1 Abrams tanks from conservation.
