A sub-sanctioned Iranian arms manufacturer has gained access to US-made parts.
The contents of the Iranian-made Shahed-136 unmanned aerial vehicle that was shot down in the fall of 2022 in Ukraine consisted of parts made by at least 13 different companies in the US. CNN TV channel reported this with reference to Ukrainian intelligence data.
The data is evidence that, despite sanctions, Iran is still finding large amounts of commercially available technology, media reports. In particular, of the 52 parts that the Ukrainians took from the drone, 40 were made by 13 different American companies, the rest were companies in Canada, Switzerland, Japan, Taiwan and China.
According to Ukrainian intelligence, nearly two dozen parts of the downed UAV were made by Texas Instruments: microcontrollers, voltage stabilizers and digital signal controllers; GPS module produced by Hemisphere GNSS; processor made by NXP USA Inc. and circuit board components from Analog Devices and Onsemi.
In addition, parts made by International Rectifier, now owned by the German company Infineon, and the Swiss company U-Blox were found.
All companies that responded to the channel’s request stressed that they condemn any unauthorized use of their products. They also note that combating the diversion and misuse of their semiconductors and other microelectronics is an industry-wide problem they are working to solve.
Iran’s sanctioned companies have successfully avoided efforts to cut off their supply of critical components and electronics, according to the media.
Telenkal also said the company that built the downed drone, Iran Aircraft Manufacturing Industries Corporation, has been under US sanctions since 2008.
As we reported earlier, the Russian Federation used approximately 660 Iranian Shaheds out of the 1,750 units provided by the contract with Iran. Now he expects a new batch of drones – 250-300 pieces.
