Fox News host Sean Hannity was shadowed on the show as House Republicans failed to elect Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) as speaker in three roll calls Tuesday. (Watch the video below.)
In fact, Hannity said the conservative fights felt more like a circus to him.
“House Republicans are now on the verge of becoming a total clown show if they’re not careful,” Hannity said. “But despite the whoops and cheers of the Democrats, the crowd and the media, it’s still not a terrible situation.”
Instead, the new GOP-controlled House, tasked with the usually superficial task of electing a speaker, made history. It was the first time since 1923 that the House did not elect a new incumbent on the first ballot, according to the Congressional Research Service.
Swapped by a faction that included Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) and Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) plus all Democrats, the vote fell short of the 218 needed for McCarthy to win. Representative. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) received votes even though he nominated McCarthy.
Hannity, usually a GOP cheerleader, noted that a “small but seemingly determined group of lawmakers now stands in the way” of McCarthy’s election.
Hannity made McCarthy’s case “the first American MAGA program that many of you love.”
In an appeal to separatist conservatives, the anchor said McCarthy would investigate President Joe Biden, oppose his “radical socialized agenda” and stop immigration.
“I always ask resisters, what are you looking for?” Hanity added. “What would help you better serve your constituents at home? I’ve been asking many of these members about them for weeks and rarely get a response. I have mostly radio silence, lots of crickets”.
