The city of Bordeaux in southwestern France will cut its lighting public in the early morning hours for reasons of energy saving and respect for the environment.
“This measure is accompanied by a renewal strategy street lightingbut it’s also part of a larger push for sobriety,” local officials said via the city’s social media today.
The initiative, which was announced last December, will run from 01:00 am to 05:00 am (00:00 GMT to 04:00 GMT).

City Hall Bordeauxled by environmentalist Pierre Hurmik, calculated that dim lighting it would save 880,000 euros and avoid 236 tons of CO2, speeding up the French countryside’s sobriety plans in response to the “energy crisis and climate crisis”.
The center of this city with a population of about 260,000 will not be affected at the moment for security reasons, as it is a more visited area.
The development of this initiative will be considered on the basis of “results”, as Hurmik elaborated in statements collected today by the public channel FranceInfo, but the city council assures that the plan takes into account the opinions and advice of professionals security services.
