President of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro, who will be replaced in power Luis Inacio Lula da Silva Sunday, left this Friday for USA, shortly after addressing his followers and calling for fierce opposition to the next government. “I’m leaving, I’ll be back soon,” the president of CNN Brazil said, according to the channel itself.

Before traveling to Orlando (Florida) by plane from Presidencythe far-right leader broke the near-total silence he maintained after last October’s election, but made no hint of his intention to leave the country before the inauguration of the president-elect.

Official sources confirmed to the EFE news agency that Vice President Hamilton Murao was in charge of the government, as is usually the case when a president travels abroad.

A group of cars used by the president left Alvorada’s official residence in Brasilia, an AFP photographer confirmed, but could not confirm that the president was on board.

The General Secretariat of the President authorized the transfer of a delegation of officials abroad to ensure “the security and personal support of the future former President of the Republic, Jair Messias.” Bolsonaro“On an international trip to Miami, USA, from January 1 to 30, 2023,” the Official Gazette announced this Friday.

Thus, Bolsonaro will not honor the institutional tradition of handing over the presidential sash, hardly a symbolic gesture that all leaders have respected since Brazil restored democracy in 1985, after 21 years of dictatorship.

Neither Bolsonaro nor the government gave any details about the trip, but according to sources from his personal circle cited by the local press, he intends to spend at least three months outside the country.

“We won’t believe the end of the world will come on January 1st”

Before leaving, he urged his followers to firmly resist Lula lives on her social networksaired in his last moments at the official residence Presidency.

“We will not believe that peace will come on January 1” with the inauguration of Lula, Bolsonaro said, sobbing, and asked his supporters “not to give up and not stop the opposition”, albeit peacefully and within the framework of the constitution.

The statement lasted just over an hour, and Bolsonaro did not have time to admit his defeat in the elections or congratulate Lula.

On the contrary, he insisted that he was a “victim” of electoral justice “which was not partisan” and which, in his opinion, favored the progressive leader in one way or another.

He reiterated that his “freedom” and that of the far-right groups that support him have been “curtailed” and “prevented” from denouncing the failures that, according to what he insists without any proof, the electronic voting system used by in Brazil since 1996.

Without mentioning Lulu by name, he predicted that “the new government that has come there will create a lot of problems” and “to impose on the country a disastrous ideology that has not worked anywhere in the world.”

He also justified demonstrations held by far-right activists at the gates of the barracks, where they demand a military coup to prevent Lula’s investiture and keep him in power.

In his opinion, they are a “reaction” to the electoral process, which “did not have all the transparency”, which led to the fact that “masses of people took to the streets and protested.”

He emphasized that he did not name these mobilizations, but insisted that this was a “peaceful, organized protest that respects the laws” and is a “spontaneous demonstration of the people.”

“We don’t want Brazil to get worse”

However, he has distanced himself from some of the violent acts attributed to some of these protest groups, including planting a bomb on a tanker truck bound for Brasilia Airport, which was defused in time by a police officer.

“We don’t want Brazil to get worse”but “we must respect our law and the Constitution,” said Bolsonaro, who argued that “from now on, any demonstration (against Lula’s government) is welcome.”

According to the far-right leader, his motto “God, Motherland, Family and Freedom will not be lost” and should now become a guide for “all patriots” who want “the return of the country with order and progress.”
