Rep.-elect George Santos (RN.Y.), who has been knee-deep in controversy over his apparent affinity for lying, has named colleague and former President Donald Trump as the inspiration behind his initial run for Congress in 2020.
Santos named the former president as an inspiration in a 2021 clip shared by the Twitter account @PatriotTakes, which monitors right-wing extremism, on Wednesday.
The New York Republican told Lara Trump, the former president’s daughter-in-law, that Trump — who has made more than 30,000 false or misleading claims during his single term — is “the most organic president in our nation’s history.”
“[He] it shocked the nation, it shocked the world and these people love it. Why? It took a billionaire to become … the little man president,” Santos said of Trump’s 2016 election victory.
He later added: “I went to business school because of Donald Trump. I ran for Congress because I believed that if Donald Trump was successful, it was time for everyone to have a chance. Democrats can’t stand that.”
Santos originally ran to replace Rep. Tom Suozzi (DN.Y.) in 2020, however, later lost to the incumbent by a margin of about 46,000 votes.
Santos, like Trump, suggested his electoral defeat it was the result of fraud. He waited until two weeks after Election Day to concede to his opponent.
Santos, who has expert More call for his resignation and reportedly faces at least two investigations, including referring to the former president’s “absolute beauty” on January 6, 2021, during his appearance on the Lara Trump show.
The comments came more than a month after he condemned the violence during the Capitol riot, which he described as a “sad and dark” day in US history in tweets recently resurfaced.
