From January 1, 2023, the command of the armed forces of NATO’s highest readiness level (Very High Readiness Joint Task Force, VJTF) will pass from France to Germany. This is what NATO spokesman Oan Lungescu said.
“As Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine continues to threaten peace and security in Europe, NATO’s determination to defend every inch of Allied territory should not be in doubt. The VJTF is NATO’s Rapid Response Team and an important part of our collective defense. Germany’s leadership is a clear demonstration of its commitment and opportunities,” NATO Headquarters noted.
The NATO High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF) was established in 2014 as part of a reinforced NATO Response Force in the wake of Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea and the crises in the Middle East. In 2022, it was led by France.
In response to Russia’s massive invasion of Ukraine in February of this year, NATO sent VJTF units to Romania in its first-ever collective defense mission.

By 2023, the ground forces of the VJTF will have approximately 11,500 thousand troops, based on the 37th Tank Grenadier Brigade. In total, nine NATO countries (Belgium, Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia) will contribute. Major units included German Panzerbataillon 393, Artillerielehrbataillon 345, Versorgungsbataillon 131 and Transporthubschrauberregiment 30. For the first time, Germany also commanded a designated VJTF special forces command.
We remind you, earlier it was reported that Sweden and Finland will become members of NATO before the end of 2023.
