Pope Francis called for an “illumination of the minds of those with the power to silence weapons” and an “immediate end” to the “senseless” war in Ukraine, in a Christmas message from the Basilica’s Central Lodge St. Peter before the blessing of Urbi and Otby.
Before the tens of thousands of people gathered in the square, and in a message given by Mundovisión, dad asked to remember “the faces of Ukrainian brothers and sisters who live this Christmas in the dark, in the open air, or away from their homes because of the devastation caused by the ten-month war.”
And although today the bombing continued in Ukrainecalled for “the Lord to prepare us for concrete gestures of solidarity to help those who are suffering and to enlighten the minds of those who have the power to silence weapons and immediately end this senseless war.”
“Unfortunately, they prefer to listen to other arguments dictated by the logic of the world. But the voice of the Child who listens to him?”
In his Christmas message, in which Francis looks at the conflicts and calamities in the world, he lamented “that our time is seriously lacking in peace also in other regions, in other scenarios of this third world war.”
He affirmed “with pain” that “while the Prince of Peace has been given to us, the harsh winds of war continue to blow over mankind.”
Pope prays for Syria and Lebanon
Similarly, the Argentine pontiff recalled the situation in Syria and said that the country is still plagued by “a conflict that has faded into the background, but has not ended”; the Holy Land, “where violence and conflict with deaths and injuries have increased in recent months,” and called for “the resumption of dialogue and the search for mutual trust between Israelis and Palestinians.”
He also asked the Infant Jesus to “help Lebanon in particular so that it can finally recover with the support of the international community and with the strength of brotherhood and solidarity. May the light of Christ shine on the Sahel region, where peaceful coexistence between peoples and traditions is shattered by clashes and violence.”
He prayed for “a lasting truce in Yemen” to come and go “to reconciliation in Myanmar and Iran so that the bloodshed will stop.” (As reported by EFE)
