The leaders of both churches agreed to create a common working group, which should comprehensively study this issue.
The leaders of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church Svyatoslav and the Orthodox Church of Ukraine Epiphany intend to create a joint working group to reform the church calendar. This was announced on Saturday, December 24, by the UGCC press service.
“On December 24, the Father and Head of the UGCC, His Beatitude Svyatoslav, met with the Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Ukraine of the OCU, His Beatitude Epiphanius, at his residence on the territory of St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery,” said the report.
It was noted that the primates of the Churches paid special attention to the coordination of positions on the reform of the church calendar, which becomes more and more acute before the Christmas and Easter holidays.
After the discussion, it was proposed to create a common working group, which should comprehensively study this issue.
The joint group was initiated on the occasion of the celebration of the 1700th anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council, held in Nicaea in 325. In this Council, in particular, the calendar rules of church life were determined.
It was previously reported that the idea of moving the celebration of Christmas from January 7 to December 25 is supported by 44% of Ukrainians.
Recall that this year the Synod of the OCU authorized Christmas services on December 25, where there are pastoral circumstances for it and the desire of the faithful is confirmed.
