Nancy Pelosi hits Kevin McCarthy with a burning question in likely final speech

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) used what could be her top-floor speech as House speaker to chide her potential replacement, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.). after calling the omnibus spending bill “one of the most disgraceful pieces of legislation [he’s] never seen in this body.

Pelosi, who previously announced she would step down as House Democratic leader, responded to the GOP congresswoman’s comments that the bill — a $1.7 trillion measure to fund the federal government through September — is a “monstrosity.” . McCarthy gave a roughly 25-minute speech against what he called “leftist pet projects” funded by the bill.

“It’s one of the most shameful acts I’ve ever seen in his body,” said McCarthy, who is trying to be speaker as Republicans regain a majority in the House next year.

“The appropriations process has failed the American public, and there is no greater example of the nail in the coffin than the single-party failure of the House, Senate and presidency.”

Pelosi, in what she said could be her last speech as Speaker of the House, said McCarthy’s remarks were “sad to hear.”

“I can’t help but wonder if you forgot January 6th?” Pelosi asked.

It’s unclear whether McCarthy has temporarily forgotten the deadly riot of last year, but the January 6 panel certainly hasn’t forgotten McCarthy.

The jury referred McCarthy and other House Republicans to the House Ethics Committee after they failed to comply with its subpoenas during the investigation into the events surrounding the attack on the United States Capitol.

However, the committee appears unlikely to act on the adjournments because Republicans will take control of the House on Jan. 3 and the most serious potential action, impeachment, requires a two-thirds majority, Bloomberg reported.
