The Pentagon’s approved budget is $45 billion more than the American leader himself requested. It is also 10% higher than in 2021.
US President Joe Biden signed into law a national defense budget bill for fiscal year 2023 totaling $858 billion. The White House announced this on Friday, December 23.
“Today, I signed into law the National Defense Appropriations for Fiscal Year 2023,” Biden said.
The Pentagon’s approved budget is $45 billion more than the American leader himself requested. This is also 10% more than in 2021, when $778 billion was allocated.
The document provides an allocation of $6 billion for a program to curb Russian aggression in Europe, which began in 2014 after the seizure of Crimea. An additional $800 million is provided for aid to Ukraine.
The signed law extends for five years the ban on US cooperation with Russia in the military field, and orders to seek the exclusion of this country from international organizations, including the G20.
It also provides an increase in the salary of military personnel by 4.6%; financing new purchases of weapons, ships and aircraft.
The law provides support for Taiwan, which could face aggression from China. $10 billion has been earmarked for these purposes until 2027.
It will be remembered that just this week, the United States allocated approximately $ 2 billion to Ukraine. The aid package for the first time included the Patriot air defense system. The total cost of American military aid to Ukraine under President Biden has reached $21.9 billion.
