VENICE

This is certainly the most symbolic of the measures taken to limit overt tourism. Venice will soon introduce a tourist tax for its day visitors. The Serenissima’s purported goal is to limit the number of daily visitors whose comings and goings dilute the bay following a ban on large cruise ships and souvenir shops. The website will allow you to book a visit, and at the entry points to the lagoon, “turnstiles” will be installed to control the arrival of visitors.

• Who is concerned?

All day visitors who do not stay overnight. Those staying at a hotel in Venice will be exempt, as they are already taxed for overnight stays, as well as children under six, visitors to cultural and sporting events and people with disabilities.

From 3 to 10 euros, depending on the season and the current level of attendance.

• When does it start?

Announced in June 2022 and then for January 2023, the event has simply been pushed back to mid-2023 following a vote next Christmas.

THAILAND

Thailand will impose an “entrance fee” for its travelers. For those arriving by plane, the tax will be charged immediately upon arrival, when passing through customs. • Who is concerned?

All tourists arriving in Thailand except diplomats and expatriates and those staying less than 24 hours. Children under the age of two can also be exempted.

• How much does it cost ?

300 baht or €8.22 per stay.

Holland

By changing the travel habits of its tourists to conform to a more ecological ideal. It is this goal that the Netherlands has demonstrated, which will consider increasing the tax on plane tickets departing from its territory. SCOTLAND

Scotland could introduce legislation as early as 2023 to tax tourists to tackle rising energy costs. The capital city of Edinburgh has already announced its intention to use this measure.

• Who is concerned?

This measure applies to tourists who spend the night there, not those who come only during the day.

• How much does it cost ?

The exact amount is not yet known, but it should be a few pounds per person per night.

• When does it start?

Probably in 2023.
