Prevention is better than cure. An age-old adage may soon become a commandment if you want to renew your passport or ID card. From the end of 2021, the deadlines for getting an appointment at the municipality have simply exploded. Despite official reinforcements, some parts of the area are still waiting six months. A situation that the government is once again trying to correct with the adoption of the decree that came into force on November 8.
This text, dated November 7, 2022, amends the decision of October 28, 2016, which authorizes the processing of personal data related to passports and identity cards. Purpose: “Allow the administration to use the contact information provided by the holder of the national identity card or passport to send him any information related to his title.”, can we read it in Légifrance? Until now, the administration could inform an individual of the availability of his title. With this new decree, it will also be able to alert him when his passport or ID card is about to expire.
“Limit the risk of service overload”.
For the government, the enactment of this text has an obvious purpose: to encourage citizens to expect the renewal of identity documents, “thus limiting the risks of service congestion and longer delivery times at certain times of the year”, mentioned in the decree. Another benefit emerges for the most jaded travelers: avoiding being turned back at security checks. Some countries require that the passport be valid for several months after arrival in the territory.
To overcome these endless waiting times, certain tools have been created in recent months, such as the Vitemonpasseport.fr platform. It lists all the appointments available in the municipalities of a division. Users can book a slot online. As soon as a new one becomes available, they are notified immediately. A service that has already attracted many desperate people from the administration.
