Le Robert will revise his definition of the word “family”.

The Robert dictionary has “tens of thousands of definitions, carefully written by our lexicographers and regularly updated,” according to its website. However, one of them was not updated regarding the word “family”.

If we open the online dictionary, we can read the following: “Related persons living under the same roof, and especially father, mother and children.” A definition that the Association of Family Homoparentales (ADFH) did not like. He did challenge the dictionary on Twitter. “Why is this ‘especially father, mother’ in the ‘limited’ definition of family?” Since 2013, the family is no longer just “father, mother and their five children…”.

When asked by BFM, Géraldine Moinard, editorial director of Le Robert publications, explained it as follows. “In the early 2000s, we made a lot of changes to the wording of the family.” According to him, Le Petit Robert online is the first to be changed before all paper dictionaries are changed. He continues. “Obviously, we forgot to postpone the word family exclusively for the online version.”

A surprising omission when you know that Le Robert is one of the most advanced reference dictionaries anyway. In October 2021, it thus integrated the neuter pronoun “iel” into its digital version, although it was unknown to the general public. As for the definition of the word “family”, this needs to be updated “Next week at the latest”we added on the set of BFM.

ADFH also pointed to the definition of family in Larus’ numerical columns. It says: “Constituted together by father, mother (or one of the two) and children.” According to the BFM, the Larousse dictionary “has no intention of changing its definition currently online”.
