The investigation is still ongoing
On October 29, 2020, just a few weeks after the assassination of Professor Samuel Pati, Nice was hit by an Islamist attack on its Notre-Dame cathedral. 21-year-old Tunisian Brahim Issaoui entered the building armed with a knife and fatally stabbed several fans, including the sexton, Nadine Devilliers, 60, Simon Barreto Silva, 41, and Vincent Lokes, 54.
A group of four city police officers rushed to the scene and confronted the assailant, who moved towards them with a menacing air, shouting: “Allah Akbar”. Immediately after the attack, the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT) took over the investigation for “assassination and attempted murder related to a terrorist enterprise” and “criminal terrorist association”. Investigations have been entrusted to the central leadership of the Judicial Police (DPP) in cooperation with the General Directorate of Internal Security (DGSI).
