Le Figaro at the wheel of the first solar car

A battery-powered electric car that moves thanks to the sun’s rays. it seems so simple that no one had thought of it. That’s the bet of Lightyear, a Dutch startup founded in 2016 by five former students of Eindhoven University of Technology. Lex Hoefslot, Arjo van der Ham, Martin Lammers, Curaine Bivenga and Koen van Ham are not first-timers.

Under the banner of Team Solar Eindhoven, these adventurers won four times in the 2010s in the grand tour category of the World Solar Challenge, a solar car race through Australia. By virtue of these successes, the young rioters were convinced that the ecological transition cannot be based solely on the electric car. Its large-scale deployment has too many hurdles, both in terms of infrastructure and recharge time. A solar car bypasses these problems and ultimately sunlight is free.
