The Ministry of Health rejected this Friday the use of mental disorders as an idea or theme for a commercial activity of any kind, such as a restaurant bar located in Independencia that promoted food and drink named after mental illness, forgetting the suffering behind these conditions.
The institution has abandoned commercial activities that promote stereotypes, stigmatize and discriminate against people with mental health problems.
Ministry of Health care pointed out that the disqualification of people with a problem in their mental health, disorder, condition, or diagnosis is a violent act that generates a fear of accepting a problem and seeking help. The consequence of this is also that those in their environment or community do not recognize the rights that help these citizens, who should be treated with respect and solidarity.
“Generalization or ridicule, directly or indirectly through language in its various forms, not only disqualifies a person suffering from a mental health problem, but also ignores his needs, his suffering and his rights and does not contribute to his recovery,” the document clarifies. In social networks, it became known about a place located in Independencia called “Psychiatric bar” whose theme is about the environment for patients with mental problems, which is strongly criticized by people.
More than 500 suicides are registered annually.
The Ministry of Health reported that during 2022, 513 deaths were registered as a result of suicide. Similarly, the organization clarified that of this figure, 55% are adolescents and young adults; i.e. 283 cases.
Diris Lima Sur CEO Junior Rodriguez elaborated that the suicide rate among said population has increased compared to previous years.
“We have some pretty alarming numbers. Overall, 2.2% of suicides between the ages of 12 and 25 were manageable. Currently, we have a rate of 3.6% only among teenagers, and this is also a statistic that for every suicide committed, there are 20 people who have tried to commit it, ”he said.
According to Freddy Vasquez Gomez, head of the suicide prevention program at the Honorio Delgado National Institute of Mental Health – Hideyo Noguchi, in the country, 3 to 4 people commit suicide every day, and every 22 minutes one person tries to do it. In this sense, he clarified that suicide is an extreme state in which a person liquidates himself because he believes that his problems have no solution.
