The town of Montpon-Menesterol in the Dordogne was the subject of several firefighting interventions on Wednesday. In one day, 4 fires were detected and then extinguished under control, destroying at least 20 hectares of forest. The presence of four flames made the firefighters suspect the act of the arsonist, Sud Ouest daily writes.
The four fires were spotted almost simultaneously around 12:30 p.m., spreading over about 1 km of forest. They mobilized around 110 men, several planes and helicopter water bombers and forced some residents to flee their homes. If the fire broke out at 5 p.m., the firefighters now strongly suspect the arsonist’s deliberate act. “Such a combination of events in the same place does not owe anything“The investigator explained to journalists from the South West, detailing that “Fire swings excluded, we know someone is behind it all“.
This is not the first time when the trail of an arsonist is raised during a fire in Dordogne. Between August 7 and 8, a series of fires in the same areas of La Roche-Chalet and Parcoul-Chenaut destroyed more than 90 hectares. A situation similar to the one seen in Montpon-Menesterol on Wednesday has prompted the Gendarmerie to launch an investigation into the involvement of a possible arsonist.
