As students prepare to return to their schools in Saclay, Lyon, Rennes or the plateau of rue Ulm, the minority of normal residents who are tempted to branch out into the private sector are faced with a dilemma: desire to leave or face hostility from the administration and some friends.
For Antoine*, a master’s degree in economics from ENS Paris-Saclay was obvious. “Preparatory teachers sold us the school like the Holy Grail. We were told about incredible possibilities without explaining to us the reality of the research.’ Today, at the age of 25, he wants to change course and join a private company. But during the four years of study, he was paid about 1300 euros per month as a student civil servant. This salary essentially obliges him to submit to a “ten-year commitment”, in other words, to work in the civil service for six years after training.
