Le Petit-Clamart, August 22, 1962: 60 years ago, 187 shots were fired at de Gaulle.

It was one of the last shocks of the Algiers tragedy and almost broke the history of France. It is around 8pm on Wednesday August 22, 1962, as head of state Charles de Gaulle’s DS approaches the Petit-Clamart roundabout in the western suburbs of Paris in the fog and at night. Eighteen years ago, almost to the day, a score of 2e DB headed by Commander Jacques Massou passed there, hurrying to the capital. But in this summer of 1962, the commander of the OAS is waiting for General de Gaulle. A month after Algeria’s independence, the Secret Armed Organization wants to eliminate him more than ever.

In his book De Gaulle. Some insight into France (Sale, 2019), British historian Julian Jackson states that General de Gaulle was subjected to about thirty assassination attempts.
