Special envoy between Nikolaev and Kherson
The night was quiet for the first time in months. The Russian artillery was silent. But no one makes the slightest conclusion. “Soon they’ll start again”, the philosopher Vasili. A soldier’s face, scarred by years, sun and a life that has probably never been easy, smiles. Behind him, the earthen wall of the casemate crumbles without him noticing.
Ahead runs a ditch along a hedge of poplars, then moves forward into a dry field. Regularly in this small bowel, which inevitably brings back images of the 1916 front, men wait. In this corner of the village, somewhere between Nikolaev and Kherson, a neighboring town some forty kilometers away and under Russian occupation since the beginning of March, this motorized rifle brigade unit is waging war.
The plain is perfectly flat and empty until the first Russian lines. Just a few positions ahead…
