More than 20,000 hectares of forest have burned in the Gironde in recent days (as we close this edition). The situation has significantly worsened and the fires in the regions of La Teste-de-Buch and Landiras continue to develop. They have been reclassified as megawires by the authorities. More than 1,500 firefighters are mobilized on the spot. Also on the front lines, the Canadairs and these pilots who worked tirelessly for days to contain the vegetation-eating flames. Canadair pilot Pierre Chicha is also head of this sector at the civil security base in Nîmes-Garonne. This former fighter pilot, who joined the Air Force at the age of 18, chose to join other soldiers under the fire control of these very special aircraft.
“The Nîmes base has twelve Canadairs, six Dash (eight by 2023) and three Beechcraft. Canadairs collects up to 6 tonnes of water in less than twelve seconds. says Pierre Chicha
