The extreme heat of recent days is moving into the eastern half, where this Tuesday, July 18, will be the hottest day of the episode. The 40°C mark can be reached as far as Eau-de-France and into the centre-east and Rhône Valley. In the west, after a tropical night, temperatures will rise much less during the day and the heatwave will end with 10° to 15°C less than Monday. The Weather Channel* has lifted its red alert for 15 departments in the west of the country, but remains on orange alert for most of the area.
This heat wave is associated with a rising depression off the coast of Brittany, bringing warm air with a southerly flow. With the circulation of this low to the English Channel, the wind shifts to the west over the Atlantic arc, explaining the drop in temperature.
Météo France also lifted the red heat alert for 15 departments on the Atlantic coast on Tuesday morning, but 73 departments remain on orange alert.
