Bedroom with double bed, two bedside tables, two lamps. What else? It must be admitted that the walls, ceiling and door will not be rejected. This hotel room in the village of Ceylon in southern Switzerland does not. Worse, it is between a petrol station and cantonment road.
Christened “anti-Pastolic”, this “room”, so to speak, is still offered for €325 per night. No bathroom at this price, but a toilet a few steps away. On the other hand, a welcome drink is included with a “tablet” of local produce, pastries from a local bakery for breakfast and “modern butler” service. Everything for a great stay, provided you ignore the road and the gas station. And the complete lack of privacy.
Null stern hotel project
Swiss conceptual artists Frank and Patrick Ricklin, twins, and hotelier Daniel Charbonnier have been making waves around the world since 2008 with their Null Stern Hotel. It all begins with the opening of a room in a former nuclear-proof bunker in the eastern Swiss town of Sewelen. The concept was then rejected in 2016, 2017 and 2018 with rooms without walls or roofs in the middle of nature.
As luck would have it, these rooms, which are still available for booking today, are located in stunning locations near Cylon City. The Suite du Vignoble is located among the vines, with a magnificent view of the village of Cylon and the Bitschhorn mountains. The Bayart Suite, located on the hilltop of the 13th-century tower of the same name, overlooks the Rhône Valley. And the Farinet suite at Colline Ardente, home to the world’s smallest vineyard, is owned by the Dalai Lama.
“Now is not the time to sleep.”
Luckily, sleep isn’t what we came here for. Frank and Patrick Ricklin invite their hosts to stay awake to think better about the consequences of global warming, wars, and humanity’s never-ending quest for perfection. ” Now is not the time to sleep. If we continue in the same direction as today, there may be more terrible places than idyllic places says Patrick Ricklin. ” Staying here is a statement about the urgency of change in our society – adds the brother. ” We suggest investing time for you and yours to give meaning and value to this moment of harmony. “. Guests are invited to share their reflections, thoughts, fears, certainties in the suggestion box. These will be compiled and will contribute to future specific local actions. The website states that in case of rain, visitors will be transferred to the four-star hotel Les Bains de Saillon. This is the first time we have hoped for bad weather on our holidays…
