The National Migration Agency announced that from August it will start issuing e-passports with a validity of one decade to citizens over 18 who apply for a travel document.
Immigration superintendent Armando Garcia Chunga said the law, which extends the validity of the passport, which is currently only five years, sets a period of 180 days for regulatory and computer adjustments needed to implement it.
He specified that Passport validity for users aged 12 to 17 will continue to be five years.; while in the case of children under the age of 12, 3 years, in accordance with the provisions of the aforementioned law.
“People who go through the procedure in August will now be able to get a passport with a validity of 10 years. We are making appropriate improvements to implement it. Some countries in the region have passports with such validity,” he said in press statements.
They schedule 1500 meetings a day
On the other hand, Garcia Chunga said that his management is making every effort to ensure the supply of new ePassport booklets, which will gradually meet the accumulated demand for ePassports caused by the shortage of found booklets.
He recalled that 1,500 daily appointments from Monday to Friday had been established for this purpose; and additionally activate 20,000 additional appointments for the whole of February and March.
“The idea is that we can continue to gradually increase the number of appointments in line with the offer of booklets in order to stabilize the high demand for e-passport. We are looking forward to the month of May to normalize service,” he said.
He indicated that, in the meantime, steps have been taken to ensure that no user is harmed, as there are alternatives to obtain a travel document on an urgent basis, without the need for an appointment, with the presentation of a scheduled travel ticket within the next two business days.
In addition, special attention is given to all people who require a passport for a medical trip, visa application, student exchange, scholarship, etc.
“At the beginning of this year, we had 65,000 electronic passport books in our warehouses. Between January and February, we received another 175,000 pieces. With the acquisition of more passports, we will be able to meet the demand of citizens in the coming months,” he said.
