INMP doctors saved the baby’s life by operating on him twice while he was in the womb.

Fetal surgeon Enrique Gil Guevara explained that diaphragmatic hernia is a congenital pathology. “Abdominal organs rise up into the chest cavity and interfere with lung development.”

One of the operations was performed at 28 weeks of gestation by introducing a small balloon through the uterine cavity, placed into the fetal trachea.

A second operation was performed at 34 weeks to remove the balloon, which served the purpose of allowing the lungs to develop and reversing the damage caused by this disease. “We performed both fetal surgeries on Valentina, which are high-risk and complex,” he said.
