Antonella Valentina owes her name to her strength and ability to withstand two surgeries while living in the womb at the National Mother’s Perinatal Institute (INMP) due to a congenital disease.
Here is what Mrs. Esther Conde, the mother of this little girl, who was diagnosed with a diaphragmatic hernia, says., a pathology that manifests itself even before birth and can lead to death.
During one of her prenatal checkups, doctors from INMP They found that the baby had this health problem and for that reason they intervened (fetal surgery) at 28 weeks and then at 34 weeks of pregnancy.
Fetal surgeon Enrique Gil Guevara explained that diaphragmatic hernia is a congenital pathology. “Abdominal organs rise up into the chest cavity and interfere with lung development.”
One of the operations was performed at 28 weeks of gestation by introducing a small balloon through the uterine cavity, placed into the fetal trachea.
A second operation was performed at 34 weeks to remove the balloon, which served the purpose of allowing the lungs to develop and reversing the damage caused by this disease. “We performed both fetal surgeries on Valentina, which are high-risk and complex,” he said.
medical experience
The head of the Fetal Medicine Service, Erasmo Huertas, said that for eight years unhindered perform operations on the fetus.
In 2022, the institution was strengthened by carrying out 11 interventions of this type, one of which was Antonella Valentina, who underwent a successful operation. Today he is three months old and healthy.
Mrs. Esther Conde had never heard of fetal surgery or that this medical procedure saved the lives of children.
“I am proud of my baby that she was brave and survived. That’s why I named her Antonella Valentina,” she said excitedly, holding her little girl in her arms.

Espacio Vital: Dr. José Suárez Reyes, neurologist and head of the department of neurodegenerative diseases at the National Institute of Neurological Sciences, said involuntary movements are considered rare and may be neurological in origin or secondary to another type of disease. He explained that neurological movements include tremors, dystonia (sprains), and myoclonus (hiccough-like shaking). A specialist in involuntary movements pointed out that they distinguish between a resting tremor when a person does not make any movements, and an intentional tremor when moving.
