The previous earthquake record was 4.2 and was set in August last year.
NASA’s InSight spacecraft recorded the strongest and longest earthquake on Mars. New Atlas reported this.
The earthquake, designated S1222a, occurred on May 4, 2022 and had a magnitude of 4.7.
“The energy released by this new earthquake is equal to the combined energy of all other earthquakes we have seen to date. And even though the event itself occurred at a distance of more than 2,000 km, the waves recorded by InSight was so large that it almost oversaturated our seismometer,” said John Clinton, co-author of the study describing the event.
Experts also noted that this powerful earthquake had some notable features. For example, S1222a lasted at least four hours, more than twice the duration of the previous earthquake, and was the first earthquake in history to send seismic waves to the surface of Mars.
It was previously reported that NASA’s Perseverance rover recorded the sound of dust on the Red Planet for the first time in history.
