Hundreds of Gold Rush artifacts buried in Central American shipwrecks are up for auction. Phys.org writes about it.
As you know, the ship sank after being hit by a hurricane in September 1857. It became one of the worst maritime disasters in US history.
The craft was also called the Ship of Gold. During the journey from Panama to New York, about 425 people died here, 153 people were saved. So, for more than a century, many of their properties are still sealed and hidden at a depth of about 2.2 thousand meters under the waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
Today many priceless rarities are waiting for their new owner. In the public sale for them it is planned to help about a million dollars. The auction will take place in Reno.
Among the many are a cover from Wells Fargo’s oldest known treasure chest and rough work pants from a Gold Rush miner, an 1849 Colt pocket pistol and 1850s paper money, an illustrated edition of the 1849 novel The Count of Monte Cristo , and a daguerreotype portrait on metal plate of an unidentified woman. She was named Mona Lisa from the depths.
The auction also includes gold nuggets, passenger tickets, pocket watches, brooches, Brooks Brothers shirts, chastity belts and even a case of beer bottles full of beer.
Note that the first gold coins and bars found in the 1980s were sold in 2000. In 2017, even more items that were discovered later were sold.
