American automaker Tesla has unveiled its first electric truck. Semidesigned for long-distance travel with the tread of a sports sedan and designed to revolutionize the nascent battery-powered heavy-duty vehicle market.
“It looks like it came from the future,” said the head Tesla, Elon Muskwhen handing over the keys Semi PepsiCo executives at the Tesla plant in Nevada.
With its elegant design, the Semi has been highly anticipated since it now also owns Twitter unveiled a prototype in 2017, but the full-scale production launch was delayed much more than originally expected in 2019.
“Everything that has happened in five years is crazy (…), but we are here. It’s real,” he said. Elon Musk.
Tesla is not alone, but he has an advantage
Other automakers have already entered the electric truck market, from traditional Daimler, Volvo D BYD from China to new companies such as American Nikola.
These competing firms have already started deliveries and many orders have been put on hold.
However, the truck that “the market has been waiting for (…) is the truck Teslasaid Dave Mullany, transportation specialist at RMI’s sustainability think tank.
What traditional manufacturers mostly did was convert their diesel-fuelled trucks into electric trucks.
Semi from TeslaInstead, “it was supposed to be electric from the beginning,” Mullany said. And if the car lives up to expectations, “it will make a big difference,” he added.
Elon Musk said on Thursday that a loaded truck with a total weight of almost 37 tons can travel 805 kilometers without recharging the battery, while the current range of electric vehicles is between 400 and 480 kilometers.
Semi from Tesla it has “all the power you need to get the job done,” Musk explained, assuring the car is “a game changer” in the market.
How much is the Tesla Seven worth? Elon Musk didn’t say that.
For electric truck adoption to accelerate, their range needs to live up to promises and their batteries need to be downsized, several analysts explained. AFP.
The charging infrastructure should also allow multiple trucks to be charged at the same time and have storage capacity in case of a power outage.
However, the most important factor will be the price.
Tesla In 2017, the company indicated it would offer two versions of the Semi, one for $150,000 and the other for $180,000, but no pricing was given at Thursday’s event.
Mullany noted that today it costs 70% more to buy an electric truck than to buy a diesel one, but in terms of fuel and maintenance, it is cheaper.
After this first batch Tesla now he must “show that he can produce on a large scale,” said Dan Ives, an analyst at Wedbush Securities.
At the end of October, Musk said Tesla plans to produce 50,000 Semi vehicles by 2024.
But unfortunately, according to Ives, Musk more focused on his latest acquisition, Twitterand “the circus performance overshadows what should have been a great moment in the history of Tesla”.
