In the photo you can see the rocky Martian landscape and a piece of sky, a black dot clearly stands out from it.
“They appear due to micron-sized debris in the detector. Most cameras have such artifacts. They usually only become noticeable when the camera is taking pictures of the sky or other flat radiometric surfaces ,” said NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory specialist Justin Mackie.
