The new drug is called Hemgenix. It is a gene therapy for the treatment of hemophilia B, a rare genetic disease that causes decreased blood clotting. The symptom of the disease is spontaneous and repeated bleeding, which is very difficult to stop.
Hemgenix is a single-dose, single-dose intravenous drug that essentially represents only a fraction of the cost of the treatment that exists today. The product is transferred into the patient’s body using a virus-based vector specifically designed to deliver DNA to target cells in the liver. The information is then copied by the cells and distributes the instructions for a blood clotting protein (factor IX).
