Scientists discover glow-in-the-dark sharks

Luminescent areas in a large species of sharks are located along the abdomen, flanks and on the dorsal fin.

A biologist from the Catholic University of Louvain, along with his colleague, discovered glow-in-the-dark deep-sea sharks that reach 1.8 meters in length. This was reported by The Guardian.

It was noted that the animals were found about 1.5 thousand kilometers east of New Zealand, aboard a fishing research vessel that used a large trawl net to study the species living in the twilight zone at a depth of about 800 meters.

Previous surveys in the area had routinely caught kitefin sharks, but biologist Jérôme Mallefet was the first to carefully move the bioluminescent sharks into a dark room. As the lights dimmed, he saw bodies flashing a blue-green light.

According to the expert, their bright bottom can illuminate the seafloor, helping them hunt while allowing them to sneak up on their prey unnoticed.

It was previously reported that researchers have solved the mystery of why sharks’ immune systems are so effective at warding off disease.
