Researchers do not deny that profanity still carries negative connotations.
Researchers have discovered positive aspects of swearing. According to them, bad words make people happy. The Guardian writes about it.
It was noted that subjects who swore could keep their hands in a bucket of ice water longer than non-swearers. The repetition of swearing also improves muscle performance during exercise.
In addition, cursing can strengthen social relationships and build trust. And text messages with swear words seem more believable than without them.
At the same time, scientists do not deny that obscene expressions still carry a negative connotation, and cursing can easily be interpreted as disrespect, direct humiliation of other people, or a general display of aggression. They note that everything is decided by the context.
But at the same time, swearing is emotionally arousing because we are punished for using it as children, but there is not much empirical evidence to support this hypothesis.
“Swearing is probably processed in a different part of the brain than other speech. In particular, it may activate the amygdala and basal ganglia, rather than higher-order processing structures,” said study.
