The world’s largest iPhone manufacturing plant, located in the center China, announced on Tuesday to its employees that they would quadruple their bonuses if they stayed at the plant after many workers fled the facility due to the covid-19 outbreak. Taiwanese tech giant Foxconn’s Zhengzhou plant, which employs more than 200,000 people, has been closed since mid-October after the coronavirus outbreak was discovered. The company ensures that it conducts daily checks on its employees and keeps them in a closed circle.
But workers have denounced the poor working conditions and inadequate sanitary measures for uncontaminated workers on Chinese social media. In videos posted online over the weekend, Foxconn employees are seen fleeing the company, even with a suitcase in hand, to return home on foot and escape covid-19 confinement.
Foxconn’s Zhengzhou plant said on its official WeChat profile that starting Monday, employees will receive a daily bonus of 400 yuan ($55) for showing up to work, four times the previous 100 yuan per day bonus. Employees will also receive additional bonuses if they attend work for 15 days or more in November, up to 15,000 yuan if they register full attendance this month.
Foxconn, which supplies Apple’s iPhones to the US, has vowed to do more to help its employees and organize buses to take employees home if they want to leave. Local governments around the city have asked fleeing workers to register with authorities if they return home to undergo multi-day quarantine upon arrival.
China it is the latest major economy to support a zero covid strategy with lockdowns, mass testing and extensive quarantines to stamp out outbreaks. But new, fast-spreading variants make early detection of outbreaks more difficult.
The southern semi-autonomous territory of Macau also announced mass testing of its 700,000 residents on Tuesday after several cases were identified, leading to the closure of one of its casinos. China reported more than 2,000 local infections for the second consecutive day on Tuesday, prompting new restrictions.
China’s Guangzhou manufacturing hub announced a partial shutdown of several areas on Monday, and on Tuesday reported more than 520 new infections. As winter approached, there were also outbreaks in northern cities near China’s borders with Russia and North Korea. -AFP-
