Japanese Rieko Kodamaone of the female pioneers in the video game industry who has left her mark on games such as fantasy star, Sonic or Alex Kidddied at age 58, Sega confirmed today.
Rumors of Kodama’s death surfaced after it was circulated that the console credits Mega Drive Mini 2released today in Japan contained the following message: “In memory of Rieko Kodama,” a formula commonly used when a work is dedicated to a deceased person.
When asked about this on the social network Twitter, producer Sega Yusuke Okunari confirmed Kodama’s death, for which no further details have been released, except that it occurred on May 9th.
Born in 1963 in Yokosuka, south of TokyoKodama joined now in 1984 the company in which he would develop his professional career until his death.
Known in her early work under the pseudonym phoenix laughingKodama has worked during her almost forty-year career as a graphic designer, director and producer and is considered one of the first benchmarks of female success in an all-male sector at the time of its inception.
Franchises with his seal include fantasy star or 7th dragonand titles like Skies of Arcadia, Alex Kidd, Sonic the Hedgehog or Sega Agesamong others.
In 2019, Kodama received the Game Developers Choice Awards. Pioneer Prizein recognition of his contributions to the sector.
Industry reaction
game designer Yuji Nakalead programmer of the first game Sonicjoined the messages of condolence shared today in memory of Kodama on the aforementioned social network.
“I have fond memories of working with her on fantasy star D Sonic. I went to the wake and funeral and couldn’t believe how unexpected it was. I pray that your soul rests in peace,” wrote Naka.
“A hard day of mourning,” commented the Spaniard Ramon Nafria, one of the producers Alex Kidd at Miracle World DX, who worked with Kodama on this work. (EFE)
